HORWICH A.O.D.S. - THEN & NOW
The society was founded in 1954 by four employees of Horwich Locomotive-Works, who were at the time also members of Bolton Amateur Operatic Society. After little interest was shown by other employees & members, the idea was opened up to the town of Horwich and in 1955, our first musical 'Goodnight Vienna' was performed on the Locomotive-Works stage, with great success. Shows, plays & choral concerts all continued to be performed at the works, until 1974 when the Loco-works was taken over. A new venue had to be found, fortunately Horwich Leisure Centre had just opened and in 1975 the society performed 'The Merry Widow' at it's new venue. The Leisure Centre then became our 'home' for the next 27 Years, until 2002 when we made our debut at the Albert Halls, Bolton with the much loved classic 'My Fair Lady'.
Over the years the society has performed a very wide range of musicals from 'The Quaker Girl' to '42nd Street', gaining lots of nominations & awards along the way.
In 2004 the society celebrated it's 50th anniversary in true style with a spectacular production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' which people still talk about today!!
The society continues to thrive but we are always looking for new members to join us either on stage, backstage or Front of house there is never a shortage of jobs to be done.
Why not join us for our 2010 production of Footloose - the musical, all our contact details can be found on the Members Page.
